Ex-cop on surviving slay try: It's just business
MANILA, Philippines - A retired police official who survived a recent ambush attempt said the incident may be related to businesses he currently runs.
Wally Sombero, who is connected to gaming firms and a company involved in conflict management, said the mastermind behind the slay try could be a rival of one of his clients.
“(I believe) I’m not the only target,” Sombero told The STAR in an interview in his hospital room.
At least five men shot at Sombero’s Starex van as it cruised along E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue in Quezon City last Sept. 12.
He sustained six gunshot wounds in the body.
A policeman accompanying Sombero at the time was also injured but managed to shoot at one of their attackers and rush Sombero to the hospital for treatment.
Sombero said there were no past attempts on his life and the ambush attempt was the first he experienced.
Sombero said he has yet to pinpoint any person who could be behind the attack but stressed that he was looking at “only a few people.”
“I will still observe. Later I will identify the persons or groups behind this,” he said.
