DOTC urges jeepney, taxi operators to use LPG

-

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is encouraging public transport operators to convert their jeepney and taxi units to run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

DOTC Undersecretary Anneli Lontoc, who handles road transport, said though hundreds of taxis in Metro Manila have already converted to LPG, the department is pushing for taxis and jeepneys still using gasoline or diesel to shift to LPG since it is proven to produce a “cleaner smoke emission.”

At the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, about 50 of the 300 new airport “yellow taxis” are already running on LPG.

“We want more of them to convert to LPG,” Lontoc said but added that the government leaves the choice up to transport operators.   – Rainier Allan Ronda
