Manila cop kills robbery suspect in shootout
MANILA, Philippines – A Manila police official who killed two suspected robbers in an alleged shootout last Tuesday shot dead another armed robbery suspect during an encounter in Tondo, Manila Thursday night.
Police said a loaded .38 caliber revolver and P3,000 were recovered from Christopher Madelo, 18.
Vendor Joselito Miranda, 45, identified Madelo as the same man who robbed him of his P3,000 as he was walking along Asuncion street in Tondo at around 10:30 p.m.
The suspect ran towards C.M. Recto Avenue. Miranda shouted for help, getting the attention of Senior Inspector Joselito Binayug, commander of the Asuncion police community precinct, who was then patrolling the area together with his men.
In his report, Binayug said he introduced himself as a policeman and ordered Madelo to stop running. However, the suspect allegedly aimed his gun at Binayug, prompting him to fire successive shots.
Madelo died at the Ospital ng Maynila while undergoing emergency treatment.
Binayug said they were conducting a stakeout in the area to prevent crimes that occur during power interruptions.
Binayug and his men engaged two robbery suspects in a shootout early Tuesday in front of a store on C.M. Recto Avenue. The suspects died in the hospital from gunshot wounds. – Nestor Etolle
