Belmonte wants contractors to clean up project sites

-

MANILA, Philippines – Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. reiterated yesterday his call for city contractors to clean up their completed projects of construction debris.

He urged city engineering department officer-in-charge Joselito Cabungcal to monitor all construction projects in the city, both public and private, “to see to it that contractors do not leave their finished project without having cleared the site of any debris, like earthmounds, sand stockpile, open excavation and other construction materials.”

He said the debris “pose a danger to motorists and commuters alike and contribute to the clogging of waterways… during a heavy downpour.”

Belmonte said earthmounds and sand stockpiles are “as bad as open manholes and leaving them open is just like inviting disasters.”

During last Wednesday’s executive meeting, Belmonte assured his constituents that breakthrough projects – such as the renaming of the city’s main roads after heroes and the installation of heroes’ monuments in parks and other public places – will still be pursued.

The city government is currently constructing monuments of Dr. Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio at the city hall complex, and the late senator Benigno Aquino Jr. at the Ninoy Aquino Wildlife Park.

The city government also plans to transfer the city jail to the Payatas area to decongest the city detention center and improve the living quarters of city detainees. – Perseus Echeminada
