Taxi runs over grandma

A 76-year-old woman died when a taxi ran over her as she was crossing Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City yesterday morning.

Police said Primitiva Bayona, a resident of Project 4, was declared dead on arrival at the Quirino Memorial Medical Center. A village watchman and cabbie Edgar Reola, 39, rushed her to the hospital after the accident.

A police report stated that the accident happened at around 6:30 a.m. along Katipunan Avenue near corner P. Tuazon Boulevard in Project 4.

Reola was driving an Arandia Line taxicab (TYR-915) coming from Aurora Boulevard on his way to Boni Serrano Avenue.

But before he could reach the corner of P. Tuazon Boulevard, Bayona suddenly stepped off the center island and attempted to reach the other side of the avenue. Reola failed to react in time and hit Bayona with the vehicle’s front right fender.

Police detained Reola, who will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. – Reinir Padua
