Ebdane to take over slain DPWH executive's functions

MANILA, Philippines - Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. will temporarily take over the responsibilities left behind by Undersecretary for Luzon and Metro Manila Ramon Aquino.

Ebdane is still waiting for Malacañang to appoint the replacement of Aquino, who died last Thursday from bullet wounds he suffered when he was ambushed last March 11.

DPWH Senior Undersecretary Manuel Bonoan yesterday presided over an emergency management committee meeting that was attended by the department’s three remaining undersecretaries and four assistant secretaries. Bonoan said that in the light of the unfortunate incident, Ebdane “has instructed all the regional directors to continue to complete the projects under… Aquino," but to clear it with him first.

So far, there has been no shortlist of candidates for Aquino’s post.

Among the major projects handled by Aquino are the North Luzon Quadrangle in Kalinga Apayao, the Baguio-Bontoc-Banawe, Mt. Data-Banawe, Bontoc-Kalinga, sections of the Halsema Highway, and the Marikina Infanta Road. – Evelyn Macairan
