Baby girl, thrown out of cab, survives
A box thrown out of a running taxicab in Mandaluyong City yesterday turned out to contain a newborn baby girl.
The baby escaped injury and Mandaluyong Mayor Benjamin Abalos Jr., ordered the local police to trace the taxi driver and possibly the parents of the girl.
“I was directed by Mayor Abalos to get to the bottom of the incident. We are gathering witnesses to trace the mother of the girl,” said Senior Superintendent Carlos de Sagun, Mandaluyong police chief.
De Sagun said the box containing the baby was thrown out of the taxi by an unidentified passenger along Rafael street in Barangay Plainview at about 12 midnight yesterday.
Witnesses picked up the box and were surprised to see a baby girl inside. They rushed the baby to the Mandaluyong City Medical Center, where doctors examined her.
Attending doctors declared that the 6.1-lbs baby girl is healthy and sustained no injuries from the fall.
Doctors theorized that the baby girl was in the box for six to eight hours before it was thrown out of the taxicab.
De Sagun coordinated with the Land Transportation Office to trace the operator of the taxicab after witnesses initially jotted its plate number as TVH-255. However, the LTO said the number does not exist.
The incident follows the discovery of a fetus near the entrance of Quiapo Church during Wednesday’s predawn Mass. Police said the fetus, wrapped in a pair of underwear and placed inside a plastic bag, was found by a street sweeper on top of a pile of garbage.
