Navotas to launch Metro's first LPG trikes
Tricycles that run on low-cost liquefied petroleum gas will soon ply the streets of Navotas City after the city government and the Federation of Navotas Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (FENTODA) forged an agreement launching the conversion of tricycles to LPG.
Navotas City Mayor Toby Tiangco said the LPG conversion program could be the first of its kind in Metro Manila.
To ensure the success of the program, the city government has set aside a P1-million budget, which will to be distributed as easy repayment loans for FENTODA members to purchase the P15,000 LPG conversion kit.
Regina Concepcion, city franchising regulation officer, said “tricycle drivers here in Navotas can now avail of a zero interest acquisition program to convert their units to LPG.” She said that under the program, the drivers pay only P50 per day until the loan is fully paid.
The national government has proposed to phase out or remove tricycles that fail to comply with international smoke emission standards, particularly the tricycles with two-stroke engines.
Tiangco proposed that instead of phasing these tricycles, they should be converted into environment-friendly, fuel-efficient, LPG-powered vehicles.
