Taguig sets plebiscite on 6 new barangays

An official of the Taguig City government said yesterday they will hold a plebiscite next month to determine if residents approve of establishing six new barangays in the city.

Councilor Allan Paul Cruz said they plan to hold the plebiscite within the second week of December.

“Earlier, public hearings have been conducted in the city’s different barangays to check on the sentiments of the residents. We tried to get the public’s reactions and even suggestions as to this proposal of creating additional barangays,” Cruz said.

He said voters will just have to choose yes or no as to the creation of six new barangays in the city.

Cruz said adding though the national Commission on Elections (Comelec) will need to issue the local Comelec office a directive for the plebiscite, it is the city government that will allocate funds for that purpose.

Cruz said the creation of new barangays will ensure effective delivery of services as well as manage the growing number of residents in Taguig.

He said there are 18 existing barangays in the city and they are presently working on the creation of at least six new barangays.   – Rhodina Villanueva
