Taguig creates 6 new barangays

-

To ensure the effective delivery of services and manage the growing number of residents in Taguig, the city council has started creating six new barangays.

Councilor Allan Paul Cruz said the creation of additional barangays is provided for in an ordinance that the city council recently crafted.

He said there are 18 existing barangays in the city and they are working on the creation of at least six new barangays. “Out of these six barangays, four have already been approved by the council. These are Barangays Pinagsama, Fort Bonifacio, New Western Bicutan and New Lower Bicutan,” he said.

However, Cruz noted, there is a provision in the ordinance that before the creation of these new barangays can be declared final, a plebiscite to get the approval of city residents concerning this issue should first be conducted.

“The needs of the residents will be better addressed if a relatively big barangay will be divided to become two barangays. Full attention can be extended to them and the issues they are confronted with can be carefully threshed out,” he said.

Cruz added that the move will benefit everyone in the city since this will also mean equal representation for each and every barangay.

Section 6 of Republic Act 7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code of the Philippines, empowers the city government through the city council to create, divide, merge or abolish barangays. – Rhodina Villanueva
