MIAA wants service providers with erring workers out of NAIA

Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Alfonso Cusi has ordered the removal from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) of service providers whose employees were caught committing illegal activities.

MIAA assistant general for security and emergency services Angel Atutubo said the first to go was Security and Safety Corp. of the Philippines (SSCP), a security agency servicing various international airlines at NAIA since 1989.

“The long period of SSCP’s servicing NAIA made its personnel familiar with various airport procedures,” he said. “These personnel got well acquainted with them as well as those engaged in illegal acts, thereby exposing them to temptations.”

Atutubo said he had recommended that SSCP’s accreditation at MIAA be revoked after authorities found that most of its employees committed illegal acts such as escorting undocumented overseas Filipino workers, sleeping while on duty, gambling, extortion, and baggage-fixing.

The MIAA had sent several letters to SSCP informing the management of its employees’ numerous violations, he added.

Atutubo said he and NAIA Terminal 1 manager Octavio Lina have been reviewing the performance of all the service providers whose employees have been found to have violated MIAA rules and regulations.

“We will do it one at a time,” Lina said. “It’s a long shot considering the number of employees each service provider employs at NAIA, but it can be done.”  – Rudy Santos
