Bomb scare alarms burger joint, other firms in Cubao

- Reinir Padua -

A bomb scare alarmed a burger joint and its nearby establishments before dawn yesterday in Cubao, Quezon City caused by what looked like real dynamites complete with nearly all the elements of a real improvised explosive device.

But instead of using C4, which is a type of plastic explosives used as a “booster” for dynamites, the one who made the “fake bomb” used clay.

Add to this, the fake bomb also had six PVC pipes covered with paper that looked like the “main charge of dynamites.

“It could be the handiwork of a person with the training and the knowledge in handling improvised explosive devices,” said Senior Superintendent Neri Ilagan, chief of the District Mobile Force of the Quezon City Police District.

“The one who did this was not an ordinary person. It had (almost all) the components and the setup of an actual improvised explosive device,” Ilagan told The STAR in an interview.

Inspector Arnulfo Franco, chief of the Explosives and Ordnance Division of the QCPD-DMF, said that apart from the clay and the PVC pipes, they also recovered a battery, an electric switch and several wires attached to the fake bomb.

Franco said the fake bomb was found on the rooftop of a burger joint before 2 a.m. in Murphy Avenue, Cubao.

It was contained in a box that was first seen by staff Alvie Timbal.

Minutes later, curious bystanders put down and opened the box, only to find out that the thing appeared to be a real bomb.

The shocked crowd then sought the assistance of the police, who, upon inspection, told them it was not a real explosive device.

Ilagan said it was not clear who left the box in the area and what his intention was in leaving behind a fake bomb.

“Maybe he just wanted to scare off the people there or maybe he thought a series of fake bombs would relax police security when it comes to dealing with bomb scares,” Ilagan said.

Ilagan reminded the public to immediately call the attention of the police’s bomb experts and never to handle anything that resembles an explosive device.
