Binondo cops warn vs fake baby wipes

-

A ranking official of the Binondo police station is warning the public against fake baby wipes and dishwashing liquid sold in the market following the discovery of a clandestine factory where the fake products are manufactured.

“The imitation wipes can cause skin rashes to babies, while the dishwashing liquid produces unfavorable cleaning results,” Meisic police station chief Superintendent Nelson Yabut said.

He said the manufacturer was unmasked after one of his male workers filed a case of maltreatment against him. According to Jimmy Magamot, 23, he was physically assaulted by Kenny Chua, 43, for slight mistakes. Police investigators proceeded to Chua’s house on Alvarado street in Binondo, where they saw several drums filled with liquid, bales of polyester fiber, a cutting machine, empty plastic containers of various sizes, plastic labels marked with Chinese characters and “Baby’s Best” baby wipes. Chua was reportedly caught cutting polyester fiber into sheets for baby wipes.

Yabut said Chua distributes the fake baby wipes and dish washing liquid as Chinese products, and they are sold openly on sidewalks at very low prices.

Police found out that Chua only uses water and local perfumes for the wipes. While popular brands of baby wipes use cotton sheets, Chua uses coarser polyester sheets.

The police also found that Chua used dirty water stored in drums – with dead insects floating in them – for the baby wipes.

Yabut said Chua’s alien registration is also being verified with the Bureau of Immigration. Aside from maltreatment, Chua is also facing possible charges of copyright infringement. – Nestor Etolle
