NBI nabs 2 suspected illegal recruiters
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) recently apprehended two travel agency personnel who allegedly duped aspiring overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) by promising them jobs in
NBI Director Nestor Mantaring identified the two suspects as Lina Donato and Raymondo Miranda, who used the alias Leo Bendo Murillo. They were arrested in the office of the Golden Hurn Travel Agency at the corner of
Donato and Miranda are currently detained at the NBI jail.

In return, they reportedly required the prospective workers to pay placement fees ranging from P20,000 to P25,000 each. When they handed over the payments, they were informed that they would be deployed within a month.
The victims waited for months, but the promise of jobs abroad never came. This prompted them to demand that the suspects return their money, but the suspects reportedly asked an additional P5,000 from them.
Realizing they had been tricked, the victims sought the help of the NBI Anti-Organized Crime Division (AOCD).
Last July 30, Gutierrez went to the travel agency and after handing over P5,000 marked money, she gave a pre-arranged signal informing NBI agents that the transaction had been completed.
Miranda and Donato were charged with violating Republic Act 8042, the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipino Act of 1995, and estafa before the Caloocan City Prosecutor’s Office. – Evelyn Macairan
