MMDA warns erring traffic enforcers

- Michael Punongbayan -

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Executive Director Angelito Vergel de Dios warned the agency’s traffic enforcers to be more courteous in dealing with violators of traffic rules and regulations.

He advised traffic aides to remain professional and declare clearly the traffic violations committed by erring drivers.

De Dios called on the public to report abusive MMDA traffic enforcers and vowed to dismiss from the service the people found guilty of lack of courtesy.

He also denied reports of a shortage of traffic personnel because the MMDA continuously trains and accepts qualified applicants in its ranks to replace the dismissed traffic aides.

“The MMDA has always believed that there is no room for corrupt personnel in the MMDA. Nobody in the government service is indispensable,” he stressed.

MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando said the program against extortionists and other unscrupulous men is not limited to the Philippine National Police (PNP) and local government units but also to other government agencies, including the MMDA.

He said law enforcement personnel from the MMDA and other agencies who are caught mulcting traffic violators will be charged with robbery and extortion in local courts.

Fernando said he also supports the PNP’s “no plate no travel” policy for all motorists, which is a deterrent to criminality and lawlessness.
