Inventor promotes new commuter bus design

- Ghio Ong, Helen Flores -

A Filipino inventor urged the use of commuter buses and jeepneys that are designed to accommodate more passengers as part of the measures to save gas with the continued increase in the prices of diesel and gasoline

Antonio Andes, a scientists and chairman of the Bicolano Inventors Society, had developed an idea to manufacture so-called “high capacity transport vehicles” or buses and jeepneys that are designed to accommodate more standing passengers to maximize occupancy and save fuel.

Andes said the high capacity transport vehicles are conventional transport vehicles such as buses and jeepneys that can accommodate double the passenger capacity of regular vehicle.

Andes recently came out with the idea of developing the “Mass Transport Bus and Jeepney,” which he said have the features of the light rail transit (LRT) that has more room for standing passengers.

Andes visited Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board chairman Thompson Lantion yesterday to lobby for the use of the new transport vehicles in Metro Manila.

“Although they can accommodate more than double the normal capacity, they consume the same amount of fuel per trip so 50 percent fuel savings is attained in consideration with the volume of passenger it can transport per trip,” Andes said.
