Caloocan beefs up children’s welfare program

-

Caloocan City Mayor Enrico Echiverri, to further protect the welfare and effectively address the needs of the city’s children, reorganized yesterday the City Council for the Protection of Children (CCPC).

“There is a need to reorganize the council in view of the retirement and resignation of some of its members,” Echiverri said.

Echiverri still serves as CCPC chairman while District 1 Councilor Nora Nubla serves as his co-chairperson and District 2 Councilor Maria Milagros Mercado as vice-chairperson.

The council is tasked to make plans and recommendations, programs and policies for the welfare and needs of children beginning at birth up to 17 years of age.

The mayor said among the priority programs the CCPC initiated were the retraining of day-care workers and advocating and asserting laws that promote good education and environment for the youth.

“The CCPC must recommend local legislations promoting children survival, protection, participation and development, especially on the quality television shows, publications and coverage detrimental to children, including the funding of appropriation,” Echiverri said.

The creation of the CCPC is mandated under Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection Against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act, he added.                           – Pete Laude
