Bus runs over retired doctor crossing QC pedestrian lane

- Reinir Padua -

A retired doctor was killed when a passenger bus ran over her in Cubao, Quezon City just before noon yesterday.

The police believe Dr. Lilia Capiozo-Calzado, 75, who retired from the Quirino Memorial Medical Center, was run over by the bus after it sideswiped her while she was crossing 20th Avenue at around 11 a.m.

Inspector Erlito Renegin, commander of the Quezon City Police District’s Traffic Sector 3, said bus driver Nargito Aurellano, 35, and his vehicle (TUG-749) were immediately taken into custody after the incident.

“The tire marks on road from the bus were tainted by blood stains,” case investigator Police Officer 2 Renato Sunga told reporters in an interview.

Even Aurellano claimed he did not see the victim nor feel anything that could have indicated that a body was being dragged under the bus.

Sunga said the driver was not able to notice the victim, whom he described as having a small frame and whose height was probably less than five feet.

According to Aurellano, he was just about to proceed to the bus terminal near Ali Mall in Cubao to pick up passengers bound for Calbayog, Samar when the traffic accident happened.

The victim apparently was crossing the pedestrian lane near the corner of 20th and P. Tuazon avenues just as the traffic light went green.

Noting that his vehicle was not speeding, Aurellano said there was even another car in front of him and that he even checked his side mirrors when he turned left towards P. Tuazon Avenue.

When he had traveled a few meters away from the intersection, a white Toyota Revo blocked his path and its driver told him that he had run over and dragged Calzado. Aurellano is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
