120 sacks of undocumented sugar seized

Policemen recently seized some 120 sacks of sugar from a truck they flagged down at one of the checkpoints set up in Muntinlupa City.

Muntinlupa City police chief Superintendent Alfredo Valdez said around 6,000 kilos of sugar were brought to the city police station after Arnie Orbeta, the driver of the truck, showed police authorities a questionable delivery permit.

Valdez said they noticed that the Elf truck (REB-447) driven by Orbeta, 33, had a deformed license plate. They flagged it down late Wednesday night at a checkpoint in Daang Hari in Barangay Ayala-Alabang.

The lawmen found that Orbeta was driving without a license and that the vehicle’s license plate appeared to have been altered.

Asked to show a delivery permit for the truckload of white and brown sugar he was transporting, Orbeta showed the police a document that showed it would be delivered somewhere in Cavite, but not its origin.

Valdez added that Orbeta was also not able to show other pertinent documents to prove that it was a legal delivery.

“We are still coordinating with the Bureau of Customs so that a verification can be made on the said delivery,” he said.

Meanwhile, a case of driving without a license has already been filed against Orbeta, who has been detained at the police station.  – Rhodina Villanueva
