MPD urges public to report rogue cops

-

The Manila Police District has called on the public to report erring cops as the MPD seeks to cleanse its ranks.

MPD director Senior Superintendent Danilo Abarzosa has activated a team of policemen who will go after their rogue colleagues as part of a massive crackdown on “kotong” cops.

“This task group will only be successful through the support of the public. Rest assured that the police will give ample protection and security to all people who shall give information on the illegal activities of our policemen,” Abarzosa said.

Task Group Katapat, composed of 23 active policemen with unquestionable character, was created to monitor and investigate the reported incidence of mulcting, extortion, bribery and illegal activities of corrupt members of the MPD, according to Abarzosa.

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim approved its creation upon the recommendation of retired colonel Felicisimo Lazaro, the mayor’s consultant and adviser on peace and security.

Reports showed that rogue Manila policemen victimize people seeking licenses and other police clearances, traffic violators, illegal vendors, “viajeros” or long-haul traders, tourists and even legitimate traders. Applicants for Philippine National Police enlistment and policemen who seek reassignment and promotion also fall prey to these scalawag policemen.

Task Group Katapat head Chief Inspector Dominador Arevalo Jr. said his group is determined to unmask the policemen and their illegal activities. The task group will also document how the rogue policemen conduct their illegal activities, which shall form part of the basis of the charges to be filed in court.

Arevalo said the public can also give information by calling or texting him at cell phone number 0919-8939848 or calling telephone number 536-1789. He added that all calls will remain confidential. – Nestor Etolle, Edu Punay
