-

At least five people were hurt during an eight-vehicle smash-up along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) yesterday morning.

Senior Police Officer 1 Marlon Diaz of the Traffic Management Group (TMG)-Bicutan identified the victims as Ronalyn Suba, 23, of P. Valenzuela Street, Barangay Granados, GMA, Cavite; Jeric Obre, 23, of A. Bonifacio Street, Tugatog, Malabon City; Jennifer Ticlao, 25, of Bldg. 5, Water Fun Condo, Sucat, Muntinlupa City; Elizabeth de Leon, 52, also of Sucat, Muntinlupa City; and Michael Sisona, 25, of Blk 10 Lot 21, Andreville, Salitran 4, Dasmariñas Cavite.

The victims sustained minor wounds and bruises in different parts of their body and were brought to the Asian Hospital in Alabang for treatment.

Investigation showed that the incident happened around 9:10 a.m. at the boundary of Sucat and Bicutan.

A certain Joseph Nieras, 24, of Barangay Taminas, San Andres, Quezon, who was driving an Isuzu van said that his car brake malfunctioned, causing his vehicle to hit a Honda Civic van (with license plates WEY-790), which in turn rammed the rear portion of a Toyota Vios taxi (TYE-742), which hit a Nissan Urvan (XRG-740) and four other vehicles in front – a Toyota Tamaraw FX (TRK-882), a Hyundai Grace (XBC-127), a Nissan Terano (LDB-998) and a Nissan pick-up.

Diaz said Nieras voluntarily went to the police station.

Charges of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple physical injuries and damage to property are now being readied against Nieras. – Rhodina Villanueva
