The Commission on Elections has proclaimed re-electionist Mayor Sigfrido Tinga as the winner in Taguig City’s mayoral race.

The city’s Board of Canvassers (BOC) proclaimed Tinga, standard bearer of the local party Kilusang Diwa ng Taguig, as the winning candidate around 1 a.m. giving him another three-year term in office.

Lawyer James Dell Demetria, chairman of the local Board of Canvassers, said that 1,056 out of the total 1,275 election returns have already been canvassed and the Comelec’s official tally showed Tinga leading by 53,229 votes against his rival Marianito Miranda.

Comelec tally showed Tinga got 87,456 votes while Miranda garnered 34, 227 votes.

Demetria said votes from the results in the remaining 19 precincts that have not yet been counted, are not expected to erase Tinga’s lead.

During his proclamation, Mayor Tinga vowed to continue the services and programs for the people.

He thanked his constituents and supporters for giving him the mandate to serve them for the third straight time.

Tinga’s vice mayoral bet lawyer George Elias has 61,557 votes against his rival Loida Labao-Alzona who got 59,278 votes.

His partymates seeking congressional posts, Arnel Cerafica (first District) and Henry Dueñas Jr., (second District) were against their respective opponents.

Tinga’s slate is likely to have a sweep in the Taguig polls. Their opponents have reportedly continue to resort to black propaganda, saying cheating is taking place.

“They have to prove their accusations. If there was cheating, they should have proven that even at the level of the counting of votes made by the Board of Election Inspectors,” Demetria said.

He explained that at the level of the Board of Canvassers, once an election return (ER) is authentic and has no signs of tampering they have to proceed with the canvassing. Demetria said they have not encountered tampered ERs which may be grounds for any attempt to cheat.

Demetria added that the canvassing has been delayed by the objections raised by lawyers of opposition candidates.

The Board of Canvasser is now in the process of canvassing the deferred and missing ERs by using other authentic copies and poll officers are hopeful to be able to complete the tally soon.
