Taguig’s business community expressed elation over Mayor Freddie Tiñga’s lead in his bid for a third term.

The business sector and Taguig residents are jubilant over what they perceive as the Kilusang Diwa ng Taguig’s impending sweep, confident that there will be continuity in the implementation of the city’s blueprint for Taguig to become the country’s premier city by 2020.

The latest count by the local Commission on Elections’ canvassing showed that Tiñga has 61,112 votes against the 22,894 votes garnered by Marianito Miranda.

Re-electionist Vice Mayor George Elias has 40,905 votes while his opponent, Loida Labao-Alzona, has 38,467 votes.

For the congressional race in District 2, Henry “Jun” Dueñas Jr. is leading with 14,014 votes while Jett Reyes has 12,281 votes and Art Alit with 10,805 votes.

In District 1, Arnel Cerafica leads with 19,812 votes; Lani Cayetano has 19,084; and Jose Capco, 4,367.

Since Tiñga took the helm as mayor in 2001, Taguig has seen the continuing influx of investments from local and foreign corporations.

He has also professionalized local government service, doing away with red tape and apathy in the bureaucracy, ensuring quick solutions to day-to-day problems and reducing tax rates to attract large corporations and institutions to relocate in Taguig.

Tiñga and his team of public officials vow to pursue the housing program for Taguig’s indigents called “Family Townhomes,” by constructing 30,000 units in 10 years with the help of private partners particularly Gawad Kalinga (GK), Habitat for Humanity and the Coalition for the Homeless Foundation.

Following the devolution of the Taguig-Pateros District Hospital to the city government, Tiñga said he will develop the hospital into a fully functional medical facility to cater to the needs of the city’s poor.

Tiñga believes that the phenomenal growth of the “Bonifacio side” should not leave behind other areas in Taguig.

Thus, the city government, with the cooperation of the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), will transform the city’s over 1,000 hectares of lake shoreline into a tourist, recreational and residential district.

It will also house the city’s affluent, the middle class, and the less fortunate residents in one residential community with the adoption of the  “anti-snob zone” also known as inclusionary zoning, a trend in residential development that seeks to provide equal housing opportunities to all social income classes. 

Aside from the LLDA, Tiñga is also working with GK’s Antonio Meloto and leading property developer and urban planner Felino Palafox, Jr., head of architectural firm Palafox Associates, to develop and realize this concept.

Tiñga believes the Taguig Lakeshore Project is one way of spreading progress throughout the city.
