May 5, 2007 | 12:00am
Five workers died inside a burning garments factory building in Caloocan City before dawn yesterday in Caloocan City.
Chief Inspector Juan Reyes, Caloocan City Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) chief, identified the victims as Rey Anhao, Beatriz Maniago, Aldouse Oriel and Edward Tan, all stay-in workers of LSR garments factory at 92 L. Nadurata street, 7th Avenue in Caloocan.
The victims’ bodies were burned beyond recognition, Reyes said.
Another worker, Jimmy Camolo, 24, also sustained burns in his right foot.
Senior Fire Officer 2 Arvin David said the the victims were sleeping on the second floor of the three-story establishment, owned by Eliza Go, when the fire broke out at their dining room at around 4 a.m.
The blaze spread quickly, trapping the victims inside. At least 14 firetrucks helped put out the fire. It was declared under control at around 6:44 a.m. and out at about 8 a.m.
As of press time yesterday, Caloocan City BFP arson investigators were still trying to establish the cause of the fire, which also destroyed five vehicles parked at the building’s ground floor.
David said the fire destroyed an estimated P3 million worth of property.
Reyes reminded city residents yesterday to be extra careful on anything that could cause fire. He also appealed to building owners to always put fire exits on their buildings. – With Jerry Botial
