PAF sergeant shoots self after killing wife

- Rhodina Villanueva -
A 41-year-old Philippine Air Force sergeant shot himself dead after killing his wife following an argument Sunday night in Pasay City.

Pasay Police chief Senior Superintendent Marietto Valerio identified the soldier as Staff Sgt. Wilfredo Capati, assigned at the 600th Air Base Wing, Clark Air Base, Pampanga, and a resident of Villamor Air Base, Pasay City. Capati used a caliber .45 revolver and shot himself in the lower jaw.

Wilfredo’s wife, Regina, 35, sustained two gunshot wounds – one in the left chest and another in the right side of the jaw.

The couple’s helper, identified as Jenelyn Purawan, was accidentally hit by a stray bullet in the chest and is now recuperating at San Juan de Dios Hospital.

Valerio said an investigation found that the couple was having a heated argument in their house around 8 p.m. shortly before the shooting.

Before the argument, Capati’s wife had just arrived home after being away for three days. She was accompanied by her brother, Richard Reyes. Regina was said to have temporarily stayed at her brother’s house to avoid frequent fights with her husband.

Police Officer 3 Reynaldo Aguba, the officer-on-case, said that the couple went straight to their room and engaged in a serious talk. After a while, Purawan, who was in an adjacent room, heard gunfire and went out to check. But she was accidentally hit in the left chest by a stray bullet that went through the door from inside the room.

Reyes, who was just outside the house, rushed in and found Capati and his wife slumped on the bed.

The victims were rushed to Villamor Air Base Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor.
