February 4, 2007 | 12:00am
Senator Lito Lapid has formally announced yesterday his bid to run against incumbent Mayor Jejomar Binay in Makati City in the coming May 14 elections.
Lapid made the announcement during a meeting with his supporters in Barangay Pio del Pilar in Makati City which was attended by at least 1,000 supporters. The senator resides at 35 Sta. Ana St. Magallanes Village in Makati.
Former Makati councilor Oscar Ibay, Anthony Genuino and singer Nonoy Zuñiga are among those who are being eyed to run as Lapids vice mayor.
He said that unlike Mayor Binay who he described as smart and with an impressive academic background, he has nothing to offer the people of Makati but the pure intentions of his heart to serve them well.
Lapid entered politics first as vice governor in 1992 of then Pampanga governor Bren Guaio whom he eventually defeated three years later for the post.
He finished high school at the St. Catherine Academy in his hometown of Porac though during his term as governor of the province he was given an honorary bachelors degree by the Pampanga Agricultural College. Binay on the other hand, finished law at the University of the Philippines and became a human rights lawyer later. Rhodina Villanueva
