Family survives Caloocan ambush

- Jerry Botial -
A jail guard was critically wounded after four gunmen shot him in an ambush yesterday in Caloocan City.

Chief Inspector Jose Valencia, Station Investigation Branch chief, identified the wounded victim as Jail Officer 1 Ronimar Masibang, 27, a member of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Quezon City and a resident of Camarin, Caloocan City.

Masibang’s wife and five-year-old son, who were riding with him on a motorcycle, were unharmed.

The suspects fled after the wounded Masibang shot it out with them.

Police Officer 2 Reynaldo Placido, investigator of Caloocan police Sub-station 5, said the attack occurred at around noon yesterday while Masibang and his family were on their way home.

One of at least four suspects waited in ambush and fired at Masibang.

Masibang was hit in the right side of the body, sending the motorcycle zigzagging out of control and crashing to the ground.

Masibang, although wounded, did not lose heart and whipped out his 9 mm Beretta and fired back at the gunmen, who were approaching to apparently finish him off. At that point, the assailants chickened out and fled in all directions.

Masibang passed out and was rushed to a hospital in Fairview, Quezon City.
