5 women jump off jeepney to escape robbery

- Jerry Botial -
Five women escaped a jeepney robbery staged by two amateurs by jumping off the vehicle late Sunday in Malabon City.

Investigator PO3 Demy Gayatao said one of the robbers, Rey Eugenio, was arrested but his partner managed to escape. Police seized a homemade caliber .38 revolver with only one bullet from the two, who failed to rob any of the women.

According to the police, the five women boarded a jeepney in Tatawid at around 8:30 p.m., unaware that the two young men who also boarded were robbers.

The robbers announced the heist just after the jeepney passed a police outpost along M.H. Del Pilar Street in Barangay Maysilo.

One of the suspects ordered the driver to keep driving but to their surprise, the driver instead screeched to a halt, distracting the robbers.

The women were so scared out of their wits they jumped off the jeepney and scampered in all directions.

The robbers, now panicked, also made a run for it. But Eugenio, afraid that they might be lynched by bystanders, fired his gun into the air to scare off anyone who might give chase. However, the police heard the gunshot and went after them.

Eugenio was cornered and was arrested.
