The city government and the private sector will also organize a fund raiser among Makati-based companies and employees, Binay added.
The amount raised will be announced during the Makati New Year’s Eve countdown on Ayala Avenue, in the heart of the financial district, on December 31.
"We hope that those of us who want to show their concern for the people of Southern Luzon will join us on New Year’s Eve as a gesture of solidarity," Binay said.
Donations for the victims will also be accepted during the event, he said.
Meanwhile, Valenzuela’s city government is sending P4 million in aid to some seven disaster-stricken towns in Albay and the island province of Marinduque.
Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian has formed a team to represent him and the people of the city to personally deliver the checks to the local chief executives of the affected towns.
The towns of Tabaco and Sto. Domingo will each receive P1 million while Bacanay, Malilipot, Malinao and Tiwi, all in Albay province, will get P250,000 each.
The equally-ravaged island of Marinduque will also get P1 million.
Gatchalian said he ordered the release of the funds, taken from the city’s own calamity fund, through Resolution 2006-364 approved by the city council.
The Valenzuela team includes Vice Mayor Antonio Espiritu, Liga president James Marty Lim, Councilor Fernando Padrinao, Barangay Paso de Blas chairman Efren Ang, city legal officer Vic Bonaobra III and city information officer Marither Menia. The mercy mission leaves for Bicol on Friday.
"Even if faced with our own share of problems brought about by natural calamities, it is never a burden to share whatever we can to our less fortunate brothers and fellow Filipinos anywhere in the country," said Gatchalian.
In February, Valenzuela sent P2 million in relief aid to the mudslide victims of Guinsaugon in St. Bernard, Leyte.
Earlier, in 2004, the city also sent P2 million to typhoon victims in Quezon and Aurora provinces. — With Jerry Botial
