Fire hits Marikina anew

Some P500,000 worth of property was destroyed by a fire that gutted a house in Marikina yesterday morning.

The report filed by FO3 Noel Guiyab, of the Bureau of Fire of Marikina, said the fire started at around 7:40 a.m. inside the room occupied by the family of a certain Carmela Navarro at the second floor of a house located at No. 13, Munding Avenue Extension, San Roque, Marikina.

The house was reportedly occupied by five families, said Guiyab.

Navarro woke up when she noticed that their room was ablaze. The house was made of "light materials," authorities said, which caused the quick spread of the fire. Navarro quickly ran out of the house and asked help from the neighbors.

The Marikina fire department declared the fire out at 8:20 a.m., or about an hour after the fire started. There were no casualties.

Guiyab said the fire must have been started by a candle since the house had no electricity for the past few days as the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) cut off their power supply.

Marikina’s fire bureau has also conducted an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. – Sandy Araneta
