MMDA removes illegal structures for Tullahan dredging

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is now conducting massive sidewalk clearing operations in Malabon in preparation for the dredging and cleaning of the Tullahan River.

Some 71 structures were demolished yesterday along Juan Luna and Letre streets including makeshift houses erected by informal settlers.

MMDA Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group (SCOG) chief Bobby Esquivel said his men are preparing the area for the anti-flooding operations.

"This is preparatory to the dredging and cleaning of the Tullahan River. The city government asked us for assistance in its effort to prevent or at least lessen flooding in low-lying areas in the locality during the rainy season," Esquivel told The Star in an interview.

He said MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando personally visited the area and witnessed initial demolition operations last Wednesday.

 "When we went to the area again yesterday, nandoon na naman sila so we had to clear the roads and sidewalks again," he said.

The MMDA said some informal settlers as well as those who erected concrete residential and commercial establishments offered resistance, but no one was hurt in the operation.

 Esquivel explained that after the clearing operations, the MMDA will clear the Tullahan River of garbage blocking water passageways that has been blamed for flooding.   

"We will also clean canals and esteros. The rainy season is already here and we have to prepare Malabon for it," he said.

The MMDA has been working on cleaning rivers and other waterways in Metro Manila in the last few months in preparation for the rainy days.

MMDA Deputy Chairman Cesar Lacuna also ordered for the replacing of lost manhole covers which causes accidents during rainy days. — Michael Punongbayan
