Parañaque eyes 24-hour water supply by 2008

- Rhodina Villanueva -
The Parañaque City government is hoping to provide 24-hour water supply for its residents by 2008.

Mayor Florencio Bernabe said they are currently negotiating with the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) and Maynilad Water Services for a 50-million liter per day (MLD) treated bulk water supply for BF Homes and other subdivisions experiencing water problems.

Participants in the talks, which included a representative of the National Water Regulatory Board, discussed the meeting short-term and long-term solutions to address the water issue in Parañaque.

For the short-term solution, it was agreed that Maynilad would increase water pressure in Lopez Village and work on the lines in the clusters in the area. To accomplish this, Maynilad needs to find a right-of-way to connect to the clusters.

As to long-term solution, since ground water extracted from shallow and deep wells is no longer a feasible option, the city government is taking Malacañang’s advise to get its supply from surface water at a higher volume. It turns out that this is a project for the entire southern Metro Manila, where the MWSS-treated bulk water supply is set at a 300 MLD for the area. This is expected to be accomplished by 2015.

Bernabe said they are also discussing with the water agencies and other water proponents to waive some of the requirements set by the government.
