MMDA demolishes illegal structures in Taguig

- Rhodina Villanueva -
In line with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority’s "Metro Gwapo" project, the agency conducted clearing operations targeting several illegal establishments located in Taguig City yesterday.

Together with elements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Task Force Bantay, the MMDA demolition team knocked down around 30 commercial establishments, including construction supplies warehouses, vulcanizing shops and stalls engaged in metal works along East Service Road in Barangay Western Bicutan.

Alice Caseñas, special operations officer of the MMDA’s Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group, said that owners of the structures that were affected went beyond the allowable space for them to build their businesses.

"They were already occupying portions of the sidewalk. Apart from committing violations, these establishments are obviously eyesores. This is why clearing operations were conducted in the area yesterday," Caseñas explained.

She said the demolition which started at around 8 a.m. had been coordinated with Task Force Bantay.

Meanwhile, the Taguig Public Information Office said establishments that were affected were operating illegally since these were not issued business permits by the local government.
