Las Piñas mayor orders declogging of waterways

Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar yesterday directed the city engineering department to continue a program for the declogging waterways and canals to prevent floods in the locality during the onset of the rainy season.

The program also covers the improvement and concreting of drainage systems in several barangays in the city.

Areas covered by the program include villages and subdivisions in Barangays Pulanglupa II, Pamplona II, Zapote, Talon III, Pamplona I and CAA.

The office under Engr. Rose Bantog has implemented flood control and maintenance program during the summer months.

Aguilar said the engineering department should double its effort to prevent floods when rains start to become frequent.

She noted that Las Piñas City was spared from floods during heavy rains brought by Typhoon Caloy, particularly in areas that used to be flood-prone, because of the preparations made by the engineering division.

"We have, in fact, completed most of the desilting of clogged waterways, including the relocation of squatter families which have encroached portions of the Las Piñas River," Bantog said.

Aguilar also instructed the City Disaster Coordinating Council to draw up a disaster-preparedness plan which they will adopt once typhoons hit the country again. — Rhodina Villanueva
