Public warned vs fake priest

- Edu Punay -
The Archdiocese of Manila has issued a warning against a man who poses as a Catholic priest and collects fees for his unauthorized Masses.

In a circular issued by Msgr. Roberto Canlas, chancellor of the archdiocese, the impostor was identified as Carlo Layson, who claims to be a priest from the Archdiocese of Capiz.

"Fr. Carlo Layson is not a Roman Catholic priest. He has misled a great number of our faithful by celebrating the sacraments. He has celebrated Mass, he presided at a couple’s weddings and has baptized several children," Canlas said.

He also appealed to priests and nuns to disseminate photos and information about the fake priest to their offices, chapels, and institutions.

Canlas also advised the offices in the archdiocese and the public to always demand a celebret, a permit issued by the Church for priests to officiate Masses

"This will avoid fake priests from officiating weddings, administering the sacrament of baptism and celebrating Masses in your parish," he said.

Canlas also appealed for the cooperation of the public and asked them to report to the police if Layson attempts to deceive people anew.

He said charges of estafa can be filed against fake priests.
