Tullahan bridge needs total reconstruction, says DPWH exec

- Edu Punay -
The Tullahan bridge on McArthur Highway in Valenzuela City needs a total reconstruction and not just rehabilitation, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said yesterday.

DPWH National Capital Region director Josefino Rigor said mere repair work on damaged portions of the bridge would not be enough to meet its required loading capacity of 20 tons as an alternate route for the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX).

Rigor stressed it would also be necessary to elevate the bridge to provide convenience to motorists.

"Elevating the Tullahan bridge is also being considered to address the flooding problem during rainy season and the occurrence of high tide, which sometimes makes the bridge impassable to light vehicles," the official explained.

Rigor said floodwater on the bridge has been causing "monstrous traffic jams in the area, especially during rainy season."

He said they are now coordinating with concerned offices to facilitate the reconstruction of the Tullahan bridge. Their central office has raised the issue with the Office of the President.

"It is important to coordinate with other offices because we have to determine the appropriate scheme to be adopted, taking into consideration both social and financial concerns," Rigor noted.

He added that their office would expedite the project, considering that Tullahan bridge is on McArthur Highway — the lone alternate route for NLEX users.
