Repairs on dam to reduce west zone water supply

- Katherine Adraneda -
Water supply in the west zone concession will be reduced by 20 percent for four days beginning Jan. 10, as the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) undertakes remedial work on several raw water cylinders of the Angat Dam.

The MWSS will be decommissioning a leaking portion of the 3,600-mm Aqueduct 5, one of the channels through which raw water from the dam is delivered to Metro Manila.

Angat Dam supplies 97 percent of Metro Manila’s water needs.

Maynilad Water Services Inc., which operates in the west zone, said that as a result of the repair work, water production will drop from 2,170 million liters per day (mld) to 1,800 mld for 120 hours.

Maynilad said this will cause customers residing in high portions of its concession area to experience low pressure to no water supply.

"In view of these developments, affected customers are advised to store water good for the duration of the water service interruption," Maynilad said in an advisory.

Maynilad will be dispatching mobile tankers to attend to the needs of affected customers.

The west zone concession of Maynilad consists of Lagro, Damong Maliit, Filinvest 1 and 2, Commonwealth, Gulod, Sta. Lucia, Forest Hills, San Bartolome, Payatas, Batasan Hills, Galas, Project 7 and 8, San Francisco del Monte, Quirino, all in Quezon City.

Also included are Llano, Bagong Barrio, UE Hills Subdivision and GSIS Hills Subdivision in Caloocan; Dampalit in Malabon; Sta. Quiteria, Gen. T. de Leon, Karuhatan, Pio Valenzuela, San Miguel Village and Malinta in Valenzuela; Meycauayan and Obando in Bulacan; Sampaloc, Sta. Cruz, Binondo, Quiapo, Sta. Mesa, Pandacan, and Paco in Manila; Pasay City; Marcelo Village, Better Living, Sun Valley Subdivision, United Parañaque Subdivision, San Antonio Valley 10 and 11, and Baltao in Parañaque; Pulang Lupa in Las Piñas; and Cavite.
