DPWH cuts load capacity of Katipunan flyover

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced yesterday it has reduced the load capacity limit of the C-5-Katipunan flyover in Quezon City after it was partially damaged by fire last Monday.

Engr. Robert Lala, DPWH regional director for the National Capital Region, said the load limit of the flyover has been reduced to five tons, which means that only light vehicles will be allowed to use the structure.

"We will have to conduct tests to determine the integrity of the structure since a portion of it was damaged last Monday," Lala said in an advisory issued by the department’s Public Information Office.

Lala added that the fire, which razed some 300 shanties under the flyover in Barangay Escopa III, aggravated an existing crack in the structure.

The DPWH said heavy vehicles like trucks and buses are advised to take alternate routes to prevent further damage to the flyover.

Lala said they would issue another advisory to announce the findings of the tests.
