Dr. Victor Endriga said the seizure of defective weighing scales is part of the all-out drive of the city government to protect the consumers during the holiday season.
Endriga said confiscated by the Special Weight and Scale Task Force were defective weighing scales and those that do not bear the seal of the city treasurer’s office.
"To avoid being apprehended we advise vendors to have their weighing scales calibrated by our personnel," he said. Most of the confiscated scales came from Nepa Q-mart in Kamuning. The task force also inspected markets in Muñoz and on Commonwealth Avenue.
"We collected an average of 90 defective scales a day at 11 markets," he said.
Also inspected were gasoline stations to ensure that pumps are fully calibrated.
Apart from the crackdown on defective weighing scales, the city government has also launched a campaign against illegal vendors that obstruct major thoroughfares in the city.
Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. earlier ordered the removal of vendors and illegally built structures on pedestrian overpasses during the holiday season.
"Let us continue to preserve the character and aesthetic value of our pedestrian overpasses because these structures are an indication of the city government’s continuing concern for the promotion of order and safety," Belmonte said. — Perseus Echeminada
