Three notorious criminals who attempted to escape from the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in Muntinlupa City were killed in a shootout with police and prison guards yesterday morning.
The fatalities were identified as Edgar Macarse, Rolando Paraiso, and Julio Deloritos, who all suffered gunshot wounds in different parts of the body.
All three are NBP inmates serving sentences from six years to life imprisonment for high-profile crimes like highway robbery with homicide, homicide, and robbery in band.
Two jail guards, one of whom was identified as Alfredo Devaras, were injured in the encounter and are now undergoing treatment at the Muntinlupa Medical Center.
The other guard is being treated for serious head and body injuries after being mauled by the jailbreakers.
NBP Superintendent Juanito Leopando toldThe Star that the jailbreak attempt occurred between 6 to 6:30 a.m. at the NBPs Building 14.
Leopando said four inmates grabbed one of the jail guards Armalite and mauled him.
The inmates eventually managed to exit from the jail premises and sought refuge at the Everest Memorial Park in Susana Heights, Muntinlupa City.
Leopando said NBP guards and local police forces immediately formed a tracker team and were able to cordon the area by 10 a.m. in a bid to recapture the jailbreakers.
However, the inmates reportedly fired at them, prompting authorities to retaliate and eventually gun down three of the four suspects.
The fourth inmate, identified as Damaso Job, who was sentenced for kidnapping for ransom and illegal detention, was captured and taken into police custody.
But Job reportedly kicked one of the guards holding him and managed to escape again.
Leopando said an investigation on how the jailbreak happened will definitely be conducted to determine if someone should be held responsible.
