Navotas named best Municipal Peace Council

The quiet fishing town of Navotas continues with its winning ways by copping the "Best Municipal Peace and Order Council in Metro Manila" award for 2004.

The title is the third in a row for the town since it first ran away with the award in 2002.

This officially makes Navotas the National Capital Region’s official bet in the nationwide search for the best under the municipal level category.

This was revealed in a letter to Mayor Toby Tiangco by Napolcom-NCR Regional Director Romeo Ustaris informing him of the award.

The annual search was launched by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Metro Manila Peace and Order Council (MMPOC) and the National Police Commission-National Capital Region (Napolcom-NCR) in a bid to drum up and raise interest in the fight against crime.

The search is being done yearly to strengthen the POCs at various levels and ensure a more enhanced involvement of the public and private sectors in the attainment of peace and order in the country.

Navotas won after thorough evaluation and passing all criteria prescribed under the revised rules and regulations governing the POC Awards and its implementing guidelines.

Tiangco commended the members of the local POC for their effort in maintaining peace and order in the municipality.

"This is another milestone for Navotas. We are happy and at the same time grateful to the organizers for recognizing our effort in fighting crime and drug abuse for three straight years," Tiangco said.

Navotas was also cited last year for its success, among others, in crime prevention, law enforcement, prosecution and courts, corrections and rehabilitation activities like livelihood projects, fire prevention, community development, environment protection and health and sanitation. – With Pete Laude
