Taguig to build school for special children

The Taguig government is set to put up a Special Education (SPED) Center to provide the city’s special children with basic quality education, to hone their capabilities and fully realize their potential as productive members of society.

Mayor Freddie Tinga said the center would provide special children aged five to 15 a learning program suitable to their needs.

"Our special children need special recognition and support from the community. We have to fully develop them in order to be mainstreamed to regular school classes as well as in working establishments later on in their lives," the mayor said.

Tinga said the project, which is supported by a City Council ordinance passed last month, would also require involvement of parents as it aims to help inspire them to better understand the needs of their children.

The SPED Center will be housed at Taguig’s Bahay Kalinga, which is a project of the mayor’s wife, Kaye, being the chairwoman of the City Board of Women.

Tinga has appointed Teresita Elias, wife of his vice mayor, as administrator of the learning center. – Edu Punay
