NAIA electrician nabbed for theft

An electrician was caught in the act trying to sneak away copper wires from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal III (NAIA-3) the other day.

Captain Alden Guy, chief of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) airport police investigation and intelligence division, identified the suspect as Isagani Mejia, 30. He works for a NAIA-3 sub-contractor.

Mejia’s cohort, identified as one Malvin Monterola is now being hunted by the police.

Mejia was arrested at around 7 p.m. last Wednesday when two men were spotted sneaking out electrical copper wire worth around P80,000 from the fenced-in area of the terminal’s departure area.

Airport policemen Corporals Efren Javier, Gerry Soriano and Orlando Santos collared Mejia, but failed to get Monterola.

Guy said Dai-Dan, the sub-contractor, later filed criminal charges against Mejia.

A major blackout hit the NAIA-3 last March due to problems with the electrical wiring.

The Terminal III had been scheduled to be opened and made fully operational on June 21. MIAA later announced a delay in the opening and has not set a new date. – Rainier Allan Ronda
