Las Piñas residents urged to help in garbage reduction drive

Las Piñas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar has appealed to all city residents to take seriously the wet and dry garbage segregation and backyard composting campaign to reduce the volume of garbage collected daily in the city.

The appeal came after Aguilar met with leaders of homeowners’ associations in the city during a recent courtesy call at her office.

The mayor stressed that the lack of a dump in Metro Manila poses serious health and environmental hazards that has prompted all the Metro mayors to exhaust all means and measures to lessen the impact of the problem.

Aguilar revealed that even Las Piñas City, the cleanest and greenest city in the National Capital Region and a United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) awardee, has no choice but to open a controlled garbage site in the city in order to prevent a backlog in garbage collection.

Citing the seriousness of the problem, Aguilar enjoined all the city residents to contribute their share in lessening the impact of garbage problem as the situation calls for it.

Aguilar also directed the media and public information office to conduct a massive information campaign on waste segregation and composting as the city targets a 20 percent garbage volume reduction this year.

"I appeal to all Las Piñeros to consider our waste-reduction campaign and encourage their family and friends to adopt it in their homes because it is the only way where we can contribute in making our city healthy and livable. We owe it to the generations to come," Aguilar said.

Records from Las Piñas Environment and Sanitation Center showed that the average volume of garbage collection in the city ranges from 650 to 700 cubic meters daily.
