A Filipino-American overseas contract worker was shot dead in front of his wife during a robbery past midnight yesterday in Sampaloc, Manila.
Police said Antonio Salud, 43, of Sampaloc, Manila, was declared dead on arrival at the Chinese General Hospital due to a gunshot wound in the head.
Investigations showed Salud and his wife Amalia were walking home after spending an evening of merry-making somewhere in Quezon City when two men blocked their path.
One of the suspects grabbed the bag of Amalia, while the other shot the victim at the back of the head. The two suspects casually fled on foot.
Police said the victim, who had been working in the US and recently acquired American citizenship, arrived in the country in January to process the travel papers of his wife.
According to Amalia, she was carrying P10,000 in her bag when the robbery happened.
A spent shell from an undetermined caliber of firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting.
Investigators are studying the possibility that the suspects had been monitoring the activities of the victim prior to the slaying. There are reports that the victim carried large amount of cash each time the couple went out. Nestor Etolle
