Pasig City Mayor Vicente Eusebio and members of the Sangguniang Panlunsod led over the weekend the destruction of thousands of pirated VCDs, DVDs and smut publications confiscated in a weeklong operation against piracy and pornography in the city.
"This is a relentless drive against the proliferation of pirated and banned materials in the city in consonance with President Arroyos call for an all out drive against economic saboteurs," Eusebio said. "This is a warning to vendors not to engage in this business."
The pirated CDs were confiscated in an operation conducted by the elements of the Pasig police led by their chief Senior Superintendent Ernesto Catungal and the Mayors Action Team at Mutya ng Pasig Public Market and along Dr. Sixto Antonio Avenue in Barangay Caniogan.
Hundreds of tabloids showing pictures of couples in sexual acts went up in smoke after being confiscated in an intensified campaign against smut publication in the city.
"We will not tolerate the proliferation of pirated VCDs and pornography in the city. I am urging my fellow Pasigueños to desist from patronizing these products for they are illegal. Buying these products means unrealized revenue in the part of the government," the mayor said.
Following the burning of smut publications, Eusebio turned over 18 brand new motorcycle units to the Philippine National Police and to the Pasig City Traffic Management and Parking Office (TMPO).
Fourteen brand new Suzuki GS125 cc motorcycles were turned over to Pasig City TMPO to hasten the mobility of the traffic enforcers in managing traffic in the city. Four brand new Yamaha Serow Mountain Trail 225cc motorcycles were turned over to the Pasig City police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Division to augment its existing units and at the same time speed up reaction time against criminality in the city.
"We will continually evolve plans and ways to maintain peace and order in the city. For it is always my aspiration to make Pasig a safer place to live in and to do business with," Eusebio said.
