Vintage bomb found inside UP campus

- Katherine Adraneda -
A World War II bomb was discovered yesterday morning at the Sunken Garden inside the University of the Philippines campus in Diliman, Quezon City.

Chief Inspector Rodolfo Hernandez, head of the Central Police District-SWAT team, said the bomb was discovered by students at around 10:48 a.m. near University Lane.

They saw the fin of the bomb protruding from the wet ground of the Sunken Garden.

"The plane may have released the bomb which landed on its side so it did not explode or the plane carrying the bomb may have crashed in the area. Also the soil there has always been soft and muddy," Hernandez said.

The students sought assistance from the UP police, which then called up the CPD-SWAT for the retrieval of the bomb.

The bomb would be turned over to Camp Crame then to Fort Magsaysay in Tarlac for proper disposal.

Last Sunday, the CPD-SWAT recovered an 81-mm mortar at Tierra Pura Homes, in Barangay Culiat, also in Quezon City.

The discovery of the mortar was initially reported to a police station in Culiat and subsequently reported to the CPD-Explosive and Ordnance Division at Camp Karingal.
