Train decapitates man on pedicab

- Nestor Etolle -
A 22-year-old delivery boy was decapitated when a commuter train hit his pedicab while crossing the railroad tracks in Sta. Cruz, Manila early yesterday morning.

Investigators said Ambet Oreno, of 2041 Felix Huertas street, Sta. Cruz, tried to beat the incoming west-bound commuter train at the corner of Leonor Rivera and New Antipolo streets at about 7:30 a.m. when the rear portion of his pedicab was hit by the train.

Due to the impact, the victim was thrown off his pedicab and hit by the train, which then dragged his body for about 30 meters before decapitating him.

The victim’s head was recovered a few yards from his body.

Felix Calamasa, driver of the commuter train with body number 3402, surrendered to authorities after the incident.

Police, however, said no charges would be filed against the driver since commuter trains have the right-of-way.

Police instead blamed motorists and pedestrians for ignoring the "stop, look and listen" rule in crossing railroad tracks

Residents, however, blamed the Philippine National Railways (PNR) for its failure to put movable barriers on railroad crossings.

In Malabon City, a 14-year-old high school coed was killed while a schoolmate was hurt after a 40-foot trailer truck hit them along a busy street yesterday.

Dycerine Ramos, a second-year student of the MB Asistio High School and resident of Barangay Longos was caught by the rear tires of the truck as it was backing up on Langaray street in Kaunlaran Village. She was declared dead on the spot due to multiple head and body injuries.

Her schoolmate, Geraldine de la Roma , was taken to the Pagamutang Bayan ng Malabon for treatment of leg injuries.
