The Central Police District Command presented to Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. yesterday two suspects in the killing of a government auditor who had refused to hand over his cell phone during a robbery inside a jeepney last Sunday.
Belmonte said suspects Jeric Fronda, 18, and Augusto de la Peña, 25, were positively identified by witnesses as members of a robbery gang operating along Quezon Avenue, North Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue.
Last Aug. 22, Jaime Calleja, of the Commission on Audit and a resident of Barangay Paltok, was killed in a jeepney holdup at around 4:30 a.m. at the corner of Quezon Avenue and BIR Lane in Barangay Central.
Calleja was with his son and 10 other passengers riding a Fairview-bound passenger jeepney when five armed men blocked the path of the vehicle and announced the heist.
At gun point, the suspects took the personal belongings of the passengers, including cash and cell phones.
Police said Calleja resisted when one of the suspects tried to remove his wrist watch, prompting another suspect to shoot him.
Calleja was hit in the back and died instantly.
The suspects then commandeered a taxi and sped away from the scene.
However, the Quezon City police eventually traced their safehouse and made the arrest.
Two homemade caliber .38 revolvers were seized from the suspects.
"These are the suspects in a series of robberies committed in the city. I commend the police for the early solution of the case," Belmonte said.
Apart from the duo, the CPD presented six other persons allegedly belonging to a robbery gang operating along Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon Avenue and EDSA.
Meanwhile, a suspected robber who was arrested shortly after victimizing an FX taxi driver along Aurora Boulevard in Cubao, Quezon City the other night.
Superintendent Benigno Durana, commander of CPD Station 7, identified the suspect as Rogelio Pasion, 26, a bus conductor and resident of 14th Avenue in Cubao.
Durana said Pasion was arrested by a policeman and a group of barangay tanods who earlier arrested two motorcycle thieves in Cubao last Wednesday morning.
Pasion was arrested by SPO2 Pedro Manaig, of PCP-1, and tanods of barangay E. Rodriguez identified as Domingo Veleta, Jhun Ayuban, Albert Dira, Leo Asuncion, John Ocampo, and Benjo Oseein.
Investigation disclosed that Pasion robbed Harold Abella, of San Mateo, Rizal, around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, along Aurora Boulevard near Barangay E. Rodriguez.
PO2 Marlon Rivera, officer-on-case, said Abella was driving an FX taxi (TVJ-242) from Cogeo to Cubao when Pasion, who posed as a passenger, declared the heist near Oxford street.
At knifepoint, Pasion forcibly took Abellas wallet.
During that time, Abella lost control of the vehicle, which hit an electric post.
The crash caught the attention of the patrolling tanods and Manaig, who later made the arrest.
