QC pioneers eco-waste management system

- Perseus Echeminada -
To reduce garbage in the city in compliance with Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act, the Quezon City government is set to enforce the "no segregation, no collection of garbage" in various parts of the city.

Frederika Rentoy, head of the city’s Environment Protection and Waste Management Department (ERPWMD), in her report to Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Bemonte Jr., said that waste segregation are now being enforced in selected barangays in the city.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has earlier chosen three barangays – Philam in District I, Holy Spirit, in District II, and Bagumbayan in District III — as among the country’s model barangays on Solid Waste Management.

Rentoy said the segregation of garbage in the pilot barangays has greatly reduced the garbage. Two persons were arrested recently and charged for indiscriminate throwing of garbage.

Rentoy said her office has identified at least 68 garbage-prone areas in the city and the following measures have been adopted — continuing total clean-up of the areas and turning over the responsibility to the barangay, stronger enforcement of environmental laws in coordination with the Central Police District Command, landscaping of some of the garbage-prone areas such as the Araneta and Mauban districts, and holding dialogues with the community and barangay officials.
